Landscape is not merely a fixed image. It is a dynamic synthesis of color, shade, air, and a blend of images in constant flux. As the writer Henri Frederic Ameil put it: "Any landscape is a condition of the spirit." A designer, like any other artist, has an understanding of this. Whether in graphic, interior, or fashion design, designers create landscapes that capture the emotions of their audience. But unlike that of a painter or photographer, the landscape of a graphic, interior, or fashion designer offers something practical. Because of this creative, emotional, and practical alchemy, there are many practical career paths for those with degrees in interior, graphic and fashion design.
Interior Design
Interior design offers diverse career directions for the creative mind. As a recent graduate of interior design, you might seek employment in a design firm or architects?? office. You'll earn a variety of interior design experiences which might include decorating a newly-built home, designing the lobby of a museum, or creating a new image for a restaurant or hotel. Other employees of interior designers include furniture stores, building/supplies dealers, and construction companies.
Many interior designers work as self-employed consultants once they establish a reputation and professional contacts. While interior design consultants have the option to work on a variety of jobs, they often specialize in one area of design. Specializations include kitchen and bath or environmental (green) design. You may choose to work with a specific type of client, such as health care facilities or schools. In whatever field of interior design you choose, you will create landscapes that capture emotions.
Graphic Design
Because graphic design is everywhere, so are graphic designers. With your graphic design degree, employment can be found in advertising agencies, publishing companies, design firms, newspapers, motion picture production firms, and engineering services. While some graphic designers work within various areas of graphic design, many focus on a specific area, such as Web-based or print design. As with interior design, some experienced graphic designers work as individual consultants.
When looking at the diversity involved in graphic design, perhaps no one puts it better than the poet George Santayana. "Graphic design," said Santayana, "is the paradise of individuality, eccentricity, heresy, abnormality, hobbies, and humors."
Fashion Design
The landscape of fashion is incredibly diverse, resulting in countless career paths for fashion designers. As a fashion design graduate, you can design for mass-market apparel manufacturers or smaller specialty designers. You may decide to embark on a career in department store or specialty shop management, or launch your own clothing/accessory line. Some fashion designers open boutiques, where they sell their own or other designers' fashions. As with any of the design fields, most successful self-employed fashion designers begin their careers working for others.
There are many specializations within the fashion design profession including shoes, jewelry, performing arts costumes, athletic wear, children??s apparel, high-fashion, mass-market, and furniture.
"Any landscape is a condition of spirit," said Ameil. For the design professionals of our world??including interior, graphic, and fashion designers??this is a splendid thing.
